What an MVR is?

Learn about MVR and why you need it.
An MVR or Motor Vehicle Report (or Record), in simple terms, is your driving history report, which in most cases can be obtained from your state's Department of Vehicles (DMV). An MVR provides information about the driving record of an individual and also serves as a verification tool for the driving license. In addition to this basic information, the MVR also generates key pieces of data, such as driving behavior, record of substance abuse, traffic violations history, unpaid fines, and other legal pieces of information pertaining to the individual's driving history.
Depending on the state you reside in, the MVR may be called by different names or terms, such as MVR, MVR search, MVR check, driver's license verification record (or report), DMV search, driving history search, driving history report, motor vehicle report, motor vehicle record, or other relevant terms.
Some state DMVs will even allow you to download a non-certified driving history report on the DMV's website, while others will mail you a copy. The basic identification material that you will have to keep ready while ordering an MVR is:
  • - Your driver's license information
  • - Date of birth
  • - A valid form of payment, such as a credit card
  • - A signed, authorized form if requesting the MVR in person
  • - Mailing address (if requesting via mail) and sometimes a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
  • - Other custom requirements as mandated by your state DMV
The MVR serves many purposes, but is primarily requested by insurance companies to make underwriting decisions or for the purpose of validating your driver's license and driving history during a background check (such as one required for employment).
An MVR is especially requested for employment purposes, particularly if the employee's role involves extensive driving as a part of the employment. Depending on the state of the residence, this report can date as far back as three to ten years or even more. It is an invaluable tool in screening out irresponsible behavior or history of previous violations.
